The Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA) became law in 2005 with the aim to create a fully accessible province by 2025. The AODA includes rules that all businesses and organizations have to follow to identify, remove and prevent barriers to accessibility in Ontario. One important standard that the AODA includes is the Information and Communication Standard which lays out the requirements for Internet and intranet websites. The standard states:
"Designated public sector organizations and large organizations shall make their internet websites and web content conform with the World Wide Web Consortium Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.0, initially at Level A and increasing to Level AA..." O. Reg. 191/11, s. 14 (2).
The Town of Essex is committed to meeting the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities standards set by the Ontario government by developing the Tourism Essex website to WCAG 2.0 AA standards. By following these standard guidelines, Essex Tourism's website will be an accessible recourse to all individuals.
Whenever possible, documents (PDF, Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint) dated January 1, 2012 or later are posted to the website as accessible documents. An effort has been made to make historical documents dated prior to December 31, 2011 available and compliant with the standard.
If you use assistive technology and the format of any content on this web site interferes with your ability to access the information, please contact the Town of Essex at 519-776-7336 and we will make every effort to provide you with a format that is accessible to you.
