Our Town's History
The Town of Essex traces its roots to the late 1700s, when United Empire Loyalists and former soldiers began settling farm lots along Lake Erie as early as 1787. Throughout the 1800s, fugitive slaves seeking freedom and European settlers helped shape the area's pioneering spirit and agricultural heritage, laying the foundation for the communities of Colchester, Harrow, McGregor, and Essex Centre.
